We have this mind-set that good and expensive foods can be found on fancy restaurants or saying: “Let’s not just go there because the place looks fancy so the foods must be expensive”. But with Punong Restaurant, worry no more.

Punong Restaurant located just nearby the bridge where the Tancu-an River crosses and you can see it from the national highway if you travel from Tagum City to Davao City and vice versa. The infrastructure of the restaurant is catchy because the building is made of concrete stilts which support the building from the soft ground from fish ponds where the restaurant takes place. The furnishing is made up of native bamboo and has a high ceiling which allows you to smell and feel the fresh air because it’s an open-air restaurant. They have also the fishing area where you can catch fish (tilapia or milkfish) and have it cooked at the kitchen’s restaurant.

PUNONG RESTAURANT INFO

Good food doesn't always come from top-rated Michelin star caffs. Occasionally, you can find the stylish eats in doubtful places like that hole-in-the- wall café along a dimly-lit alley or a floating eatery incompletely obscured from the road by a wall of mangrove trees.

We discovered the ultimate on a veritably stormy morning on our way to Davao City from Tagum City, Davao del Norte. The rain was falling in wastes and it was simply getting too dangerous to balance the auto on the slippery trace. With tummies growling, we decided to seek out the eatery we saw on the way to Banana Beach Resort the day ahead.

Punong Restaurant catches the passersby’s attention by its position behind a wall of mangrove trees. There’s commodity about its “ hidden” position that spurs one’s curiosity. It’s located right by the ground that crosses the Tancu-an Swash. The Tagum City River Cruise is just hard; I would have wanted to go for the voyage but of course that was out of the question because of the rainfall.

As it turns out, Punong Restaurant is formerly a popular dining stop for trippers passing by the public trace going north from Davao City. I've noway heard of it however. I was either sleeping or my nose was buried in a book when we passed this road ahead.

Punong Restaurant has two structures that are both on concrete stilts to give the print that it's floating. The Malay alleviation is apparent, complete with a thatched roof, native bamboo furnishings, and high ceilings. Tables look out to an excellent view of the fish ponds (punong) on which it's erected.
By the time our friendly server took our orders, the skies has kindly cleared and the rain has reduced itself into a mizzle. I decided to explore the walk while staying for the food and work up an appetite. The rustic walkway covers quite a distance from Punong Restaurant until it reaches the jump-off point for the Tagum River Cruise.

My perambulation on the walk was uneventful save for when I accidentally stepped on a rotting plank and I nearly lost my balance. Other than that, it was a beautiful perambulation with the eatery behind me, the swash ahead, a wall of mangrove trees on my leftism and the fish pond on my right. I came back just in time for lunch.

Punong Restaurant serves excellent Filipino classic dishes as well as a many told by foreign cookeries. Still, the main draw is really their seafood dishes. The‘ stylish merchandisers’and‘ cook- recommended’ dishes vault out from the menu, easily pronounced and matched with prints. We ordered Steamed Grouser, Ginataang Alimango and Gambas (prawns). We also got pork regale since we were traveling with a two- time-old picky eater.

For cranks, guests get to choose between the manly or womanish variety. Manly cranks are larger and have further meat while ladies have further of the succulent, cholesterol-laden roe locally appertained to as aligue. They say there's also a “ bakla” (gay) variety which has the stylish of both worlds but it wasn't on offer at Punong Restaurant. They're priced per 100 grams and each generally weighs about half a kilogram so you can imagine just how big they can get.

Our orders arrived along with mallets and small rustic board. The gambas and ginataang alimango were served on sizzling plates.

The food was excellent! The cranks were really fresh, meaty and delicious. The prawns were cooked with just the right quantum of spice and were still juicy, not resilient like how they frequently turn out after being overcooked. I especially liked the ginataang alimango ( grouser cooked in coconut milk and mixed with some veggies); the taste of the coconut milk wasn't entirely inviting and the vegetables were actually comestible and not just garnishing!

I couldn't say important about the pork regale but it was okay, I guess. I can fluently overlook the blankness of the meat because seafood is their specialty. There are also other pork, flesh, beef and vegetable dishes on the menu for those who are antipathetic to seafood.

Punong Restaurant’s prices leaning towards the precious side but for the view and the taste, it’s surely worth every peso. We paid P1400 for four dishes and a mug of white rice — a little too precious for our regular dining charges but we can’t complain. Our big grins and full bellies tell us that it was plutocrat well spent.
